E+R=O

Some of you may have heard of Jack Canfield, the guy behind ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ and ‘Success Principles’, two great books which I have in my personal collection at home. He’s known as the ‘American’s Number 1 Success Coach’ and has helped billions worldwide achieve their goals and reach massive success…

So why am I telling you about this guy?

Well, back in 2008 when I moved to Spain to work as a Lecturer at a Personal Training Institute, I was recommended to read more of his work and get familiar with the formula – E+R=O.

Since then, I use this formula in my own life, with my family, people I meet and also with the Members at Paramount Fitness.

The formula means:

E = Event – A stage / event / moment in your life of some capacity.

R = Response – The way in which you respond to said stage / event / moment in your life.

O – Outcome – The result of the decision you made / response, to the stage / event / moment in your life.

Now this is applicable to EVERYTHING YOU DO.

Let me give you an example.

1. You lose your job, you get frustrated, this results in you eating bad foods (comfort), you have this new level of self doubt and feel that you have no worth. You sprawl out on the sofa, watch Loose Women and waste time… Your situation gets worse.

Negative:

Event = Losing your job.
Response = Negative, lazy and non-productive
Outcome = No job, put weight on, become lethargic.

Let’s say you flip this on it’s head. You look at this with a positive mindset.

1. You lose your job, you become determined to find a more suited career, you update your CV, send out multiple applications, you’re being productive and you get offered interviews left, right and centre.

Positive:

Event = Losing your job.
Response = Positive, determined and productive.
Outcome = New CV, applications sent out, interviews arranged, new Job.

How is this applicable to Fat Loss, losing weight and getting in shape?

Well maybe you haven’t had an event in your life just yet which has been so pivotal, that you’ve been so desperate to make the change. Maybe you haven’t been told that you’re borderline Diabetic, maybe you haven’t been told that you’re in danger of Heart Disease, have High Blood Pressure and need to lead a better lifestyle. Maybe you haven’t looked at yourself in the Mirror yet and thought ‘I should be looking after myself better than this’. You may not have had one of those moments yet.

It doesn’t even have to be you. It could be a family member, maybe when a close friend or relative has a Heart Attack, that may ignite a fire inside you to make you realise how important your health is?

However you look at it, these are all Events.

It is how you choose to Respond to these events which will bring about a desired Outcome.

If you’re at a stage in your life where you know you want to better yourself, you want to have a great body, you want more confidence and want to feel sexy again, then you have an Event.

One thing I have definitely learned from this is that YOU are accountable for everything. It is your decisions in life that have led you to where you are right now.

If you are unhappy with something in your life right now, change it. Make different decisions which will bring about different outcomes.

You can’t have everything you want, but you can have anything you want.
